Where it comes from

The story of Mathieu

Matthew was among the most-given names in medieval Europe, carried by the evangelist whose Gospel opens the New Testament. French reduced the Latin form to Mathieu and Matthieu, both of which are standard, and the name traveled with French to Quebec, Acadia, Louisiana, Belgium and West Africa. In American records it appears with French-Canadian and Louisiana families and, more recently, with Haitian and West African ones, where French remains the language of documents.

Meaning

gift of God

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Mathieu went to 20 boys in 2025, but Matthieu is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 31, which makes it the 897th most-given boys’ name of the year — 3,960 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 55,099 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 85,404 for Mathieu itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is the same name as Matthew, so it is legible everywhere while looking distinct.
  • Matt is available as a short form that needs no explaining at all.
  • It keeps a French-speaking family line visible on a document.
What to consider
  • American forms will default to Matthew, and the correction becomes routine.
  • The French ending is difficult for English speakers, so the name is regularly said MATH-yoo.
  • Mathieu and Matthieu are both standard in French, so spellings within a family may differ.
