Where it comes from
From marinus to Marin
The story of Marin
Marinus was a Roman name that Christianity carried forward through several saints, among them the stonemason whose hermitage on Mount Titano became the republic of San Marino. From Latin it went into French as Marin, into Italian as Marino, into Croatian and Romanian as Marin, where it became very widely used. Romanian and Croatian families brought it to American records, and it arrived separately as a French name and, quite apart from all of that, as a California county named by Spanish sailors.

of the sea
Latin marinus, of the sea, is the reading usually given and the one the Romance languages have always assumed. The rival account derives Marinus from the Roman family name Marius, which is itself unexplained and may have nothing to do with the sea at all. Both are serious, and the sea reading is the older tradition.

The Baudelio test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Marin's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Baudelio climbed just as high around 1929, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Baudelio's path sketches the road Marin is walking now.
Marin sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a single clear image and easy to state.
- It is a full name in Romanian, Croatian, French and Italian at once.
- Five letters and two syllables keep it simple to write anywhere.
- Marin, Marina and Marino are close enough to be substituted in writing.
- In much of the United States it is best known as a California county.
- The stress differs between French and the Slavic languages, so the name is said two ways.
