Where it comes from

The story of Aloysius

Aloysius Gonzaga was an Italian Jesuit of noble family who gave up his inheritance and died at twenty-three nursing plague victims in Rome. Canonized in 1726 and made patron of youth, he carried the Latin form across Catholic Europe and into Irish and Irish-American naming, often as a middle name. It peaked in American records around 1915.

Meaning

famous warrior

Through the Provençal Aloys, a form of Louis, from the Germanic hlud, 'famous', and wig, 'war'. The Latinized Aloysius was created for ecclesiastical use. It is the same name as Louis, Ludwig, Luigi and Clovis, arrived at by a different route.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • A documented Jesuit saint with a genuinely affecting biography stands behind it.
  • It is unmistakable — almost nobody else in a room will have it.
  • Al is available as a completely ordinary short form.
What to consider
  • Four syllables and a spelling that has to be dictated every time.
  • It reads as strongly Catholic and strongly old-fashioned.
  • It is period-coded to the early twentieth century.
