The story of Carlyle
Carlisle sat on the frontier for a thousand years, Roman then Anglian then contested between England and Scotland, and families from the town and its district carried its name as a surname on both sides of the border. Scots often wrote it Carlyle. It traveled to America with border families in the eighteenth century, and by the nineteenth it was being used as a first name in the ordinary American way. Its literary association, from a nineteenth-century Scottish historian and essayist, kept the y spelling visible.

The Augusta test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Carlyle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Augusta climbed just as high around 1901, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Augusta's path sketches the road Carlyle is walking now.
Carlyle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It carries a documented place with two thousand years of recorded history behind it.
- Carl and Lyle both work as short forms and are complete names elsewhere.
- It reads as formal and slightly literary, which suits a name meant to be grown into.
- Carlisle is the standard spelling of the place and gets written instead.
- Two stress patterns circulate and the spelling settles neither.
- It is uncommon enough now to sound antique, which is charm to some families and weight to others.
