The first emperor's wife was given this title in his will. Livia had been his consort for half a century when he died; the will adopted her into his own family and granted her the name he had made into a title, so that she left his funeral called something she had not been called at his bedside.

Where it comes from

The story of Augusta

The title founded a whole line of city names across the empire. Turin was Augusta Taurinorum, Mérida in Spain was Augusta Emerita, Trier on the Moselle was Augusta Treverorum, and Augsburg in Bavaria still carries it in the first syllable of its name. Founding a colony and naming it after the emperor was ordinary imperial practice, and the result is that a woman's name in an American classroom is the same word as four European cities, two of which are still capitals of something.

Meaning

venerable, worthy of honor

A Latin adjective connected to augury and to increase, taken as a title before it was ever a name. The sense is not disputed.

Augusta sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1919, with 40 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

Fashion outlook

Augusta sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a genuine Roman name with a documented history behind it.
  • Gus and Gussie sit inside it with very different registers.
  • It is formal and dignified without being difficult.
What to consider
  • It is firmly of a much older generation and reads that way.
  • The record holds boys as well, and the boy is much the smaller side.
  • It shares its spelling with several cities and a golf tournament.
