The story of Albert
The other Albert worth knowing about taught Thomas Aquinas. Albertus Magnus was a thirteenth-century German friar who wrote about theology, logic, botany, zoology, mineralogy, astronomy and the anatomy of insects, on the principle that observing the world was a legitimate way of thinking about it — which was not the consensus. He is the patron saint of scientists, which is a rare thing for a medieval churchman to end up as. The name reached England with the Normans, went quiet, and came roaring back with the prince consort.
