Where each name comes from
Albert
noble and bright
The Germanic compound joins a word for noble to one for bright or famous. Both elements are among the commonest in the whole stock, and the reading has never been disputed.
Adalberht → Albert
How it traveled
The other Albert worth knowing about taught Thomas Aquinas. Albertus Magnus was a thirteenth-century German friar who wrote about theology, logic, botany, zoology, mineralogy, astronomy and the anatomy of insects, on the principle that observing the world was a legitimate way of thinking about it — which was not the consensus.
Amiri
princely; of a commander — from Arabic amīr
Amīr comes from the Arabic root meaning 'to command'; it is the same word as the title emir. Amiri is the adjectival form, and also the ordinary Swahili form of Amir.
amīr (Arabic) → Amir → Amiri
How it traveled
The root is the Arabic verb meaning 'to command', which gave amīr — a commander, a prince — a title that spread with Arabic across North Africa, Persia, Turkey, South Asia and the Swahili coast, surviving in English as emir. Amiri is the adjectival form of that word and, in Swahili, the everyday shape the name takes.

Out loud, and in short
Albert
AL-burt
Two syllables with the weight at the front. French says al-BAIR with the final consonant silent, and Italian and Spanish give it three as Alberto.
- Al — The standard American short form; used for women and men both.
- Bert — Cut from the back; a standing name of its own.
- Bertie — The affectionate British form; carried by two kings before they took other names.
Amiri
ah-MEER-ee
Three syllables, stress on the middle one. Some American speakers open with a softer uh-. The spelling gives the sound away, so strangers rarely have to guess.
- Amir — The shorter parent form; stands fully on its own as a given name in many languages, so it doubles as an everyday nickname.
- Ami — Informal, family-level shortening; also a given name in its own right elsewhere.
- Miri — Informal, drawn from the stressed middle of the name.
- Riri — Playful reduplication used mostly by younger relatives and small children.

The trade-offs, name by name
Albert
Strengths
- It has a form in every European language and is recognized across all of them.
- Al and Bert are established short forms with quite different registers.
- It has an unbroken run in American records from the first year they were kept.
To consider
- It is strongly associated with the first half of the twentieth century in America.
- The spelling is recorded for a small number of girls, though it reads overwhelmingly as a boy's name.
- Two British kings were christened Albert and both chose different names on taking the throne.
Amiri
Strengths
- Built on the same root as Amir and Emir, names already familiar across Arabic, Persian, Turkish, Urdu and Swahili speech.
- Reads phonetically in English — most people say it correctly on sight without being taught.
- Its meaning is settled rather than disputed, which is not true of every name a parent looks up.
To consider
- It sits very close to Amir and Amira, and to Amara. Expect a lifetime of gentle corrections when the final vowel gets dropped or swapped — and consider whether one of those is actually the name you want.
- Amiri is also a well-known luxury clothing label, named for its founder. That association is current and mostly harmless, but people will occasionally mention it.
- The spelling is recorded for both boys and girls, leaning to boys. A girl named Amiri may be assumed male on paperwork before anyone meets her.
