Where each name comes from
Abdiel
servant of God
From Hebrew ʿeved, 'servant', joined to El, 'God' — the same El that ends Daniel, Gabriel and Michael.
Avdiel (Hebrew) → Abdiel (Greek and Latin Bibles) → Abdiel (Spanish and English)
How it traveled
Abdiel appears in the Hebrew Bible in the genealogies of 1 Chronicles, as the name of a man of the tribe of Gad — a single mention, and then silence. It was John Milton who gave the name its second life: in Book V of Paradise Lost, published in the seventeenth century, Abdiel is the seraph who stands alone against Satan's rebellion, 'faithful found among the faithless'.
Albert
noble and bright
The Germanic compound joins a word for noble to one for bright or famous. Both elements are among the commonest in the whole stock, and the reading has never been disputed.
Adalberht → Albert
How it traveled
The other Albert worth knowing about taught Thomas Aquinas. Albertus Magnus was a thirteenth-century German friar who wrote about theology, logic, botany, zoology, mineralogy, astronomy and the anatomy of insects, on the principle that observing the world was a legitimate way of thinking about it — which was not the consensus.

Out loud, and in short
Abdiel
ahb-dee-EL
That is the Spanish stress, on the last syllable. English speakers often say AB-dee-ul instead, with the weight at the front. Both are heard in the US, and families generally settle on one early.
- Abdi — The most common short form in everyday use; also stands alone as a given name in Somali and Arabic-speaking families.
- Diel — Informal, taken from the stressed end of the name; household and friend-group use rather than paperwork.
- Abdielito — Spanish diminutive used by family, most often with small children.
Albert
AL-burt
Two syllables with the weight at the front. French says al-BAIR with the final consonant silent, and Italian and Spanish give it three as Alberto.
- Al — The standard American short form; used for women and men both.
- Bert — Cut from the back; a standing name of its own.
- Bertie — The affectionate British form; carried by two kings before they took other names.

The trade-offs, name by name
Abdiel
Strengths
- Spelled exactly as it sounds in Spanish, and readable in English without unusual letters — no silent parts, no rival spellings competing for it.
- Works unchanged in Spanish and English, which matters in bilingual families and across borders.
- A documented history reaching from the Hebrew Bible through Milton to the present, with the meaning intact the whole way.
To consider
- Most English speakers in the US will not have met it, so expect a pronunciation correction now and then, mainly over where the stress falls.
- It is close enough to Abdul and Abdiel-like Arabic names that some people will assume a connection that isn't there — the roots are cousins, but the name is Hebrew.
- He is unlikely to share it with a classmate, which some children enjoy and others find tiring in the years when blending in feels easier.
Albert
Strengths
- It has a form in every European language and is recognized across all of them.
- Al and Bert are established short forms with quite different registers.
- It has an unbroken run in American records from the first year they were kept.
To consider
- It is strongly associated with the first half of the twentieth century in America.
- The spelling is recorded for a small number of girls, though it reads overwhelmingly as a boy's name.
- Two British kings were christened Albert and both chose different names on taking the throne.
