The story of Lauro
The laurel carried more meaning in the Roman world than any other plant: generals wore it in triumph, poets were crowned with it, and the emperor's letters were sent wrapped in it after a victory. Names built on the word followed, Laurus and Laurentius among them, and Christianity added a much-venerated Roman deacon called Laurentius who gave Europe Lorenzo, Lawrence and Lars. Lauro is the plain form of the word itself, used in Italy, Spain, Mexico and the Philippines, and it came to American records with families from those places.
Meaning
laurel; the bay tree
Latin laurus, the laurel or bay. The tree was sacred to Apollo and its leaves crowned victors and poets, which is why laureate came to mean honored and why a degree is a baccalaureate.

The Casmir test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Lauro's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Casmir climbed just as high around 1915, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Casmir's path sketches the road Lauro is walking now.
Lauro sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a single plant with an enormous documented history behind it.
- It works identically in Italian, Spanish and Portuguese households.
- Two syllables ending on a vowel make it easy for very young children.
- English speakers may read it as a form of Laura and assume it is a girls' name.
- It is short enough to offer little in the way of short forms.
- Lauro and Laura differ by one letter, which causes trouble on forms.
