Where it comes from

The story of Matthieu

Matthew the apostle and evangelist gave the name universal Christian currency, and every European language has a form: Matthieu and Mathieu in France, Matteo in Italy, Mateo in Spain, Mattias in Scandinavia, Matvey in Russia. The French spelling with the double t is the more traditional; Mathieu with one is now more common in France itself. American usage of Matthieu is small and reflects French-Canadian and Louisiana French descent as much as any fashion, peaking in 1998.

Meaning

Hebrew "gift of Yahweh"

From Mattityahu: mattat, a gift, plus yahu, a short form of the divine name. The Greek Matthaios shortened it, and Latin Matthaeus carried the doubled t that most European forms still show. Theodore, from Greek, means exactly the same thing by a different route — a gift of God — which is a nice coincidence of two languages arriving at one idea.

Matthieu sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1998, with 36 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Matthieu went to 11 boys in 2025, but Mathieu is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 31, which makes it the 897th most-given boys’ name of the year — 6,297 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 55,099 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 155,280 for Matthieu itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The etymology is settled and unusually pleasing — a gift.
  • Matt is the most universally understood short form available.
  • The French spelling is genuine rather than a respelling.
What to consider
  • Matthew is far more common in America and will be assumed.
  • The final French vowel is not producible in English.
  • Mathieu with one t is the more common French spelling.
