Miriam may be Egyptian. Moses' name almost certainly is — mose, born of, as in Thutmose and Ramose — and his sister's name is best explained the same way, from Egyptian mry, beloved. The traditional Hebrew readings of Miriam do not work well.

Where it comes from

The story of Maryah

Several names in the Exodus narrative look Egyptian rather than Hebrew, which is what the story itself would predict. Moses is the clearest: Egyptian mose, born of, appears in Thutmose, born of Thoth, and Ramesses, born of Ra, and the Hebrew explanation in the text — drawn from the water — is a pun rather than a derivation. Phinehas is Egyptian for the Nubian. Hophni and Merari have also been proposed. Miriam belongs in that group. The name became Mary through Greek Mariam and Latin Maria, and Mariah preserves an older English pronunciation of it. Maryah peaks in America in 2008.

Meaningnot established

Not established — possibly Egyptian "beloved"

Miryam has no secure Hebrew etymology. The readings usually offered — bitterness, from mar; rebellion, from marah; sea of sorrow — are all folk derivations that fit the letters imperfectly. The likeliest scholarly proposal is Egyptian mry, beloved, consistent with the Exodus narrative's Egyptian setting. Maryah is an American respelling of Mariah, itself an older English spelling of Maria.

Maryah sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 2008, with 124 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

About 1 girl in 432 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 123,636 for Maryah itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

What to consider
  • Mariah is the standard spelling and will be substituted.
  • The meaning is genuinely unknown despite the readings often given.
  • It is easily confused with Maria in writing.
