Mariah
Feminine · “From Hebrew Miryam”
Mariah is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 115,096 girls against 183 boys since 1880.
Mariah is the old English way of saying Maria, kept alive in spelling. For a couple of centuries English speakers said the name muh-RYE-uh, and when the pronunciation drifted toward muh-REE-uh, this spelling stayed behind to hold the older sound. It has been on American records since the nineteenth century without a break.

The story of Mariah
The line begins with Miryam, sister of Moses in the Hebrew Bible, which the Greek translators rendered Mariam and Maria, and Latin carried onward as Maria — the name of Jesus's mother and, through her, one of the most widely given names in the Christian world. English took Maria in and pronounced it muh-RYE-uh, the ordinary reading in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and Mariah is simply that pronunciation written down. When the Continental muh-REE-uh became standard for the Maria spelling, Mariah quietly went its own way as a separate name. The pronunciation survived elsewhere too: the 1951 Lerner and Loewe musical Paint Your Wagon has a song about a wind called Maria, sung as Mariah.

From Hebrew Miryam — most often read as "bitter," "beloved," or "rebellious"
Miryam is one of the oldest genuinely unsettled names in the Bible. The traditional Hebrew reading connects it to a root for bitterness; another long-standing reading gives "rebellious"; a third, favored by many modern scholars, traces it to the Egyptian element mry, "beloved," since Miriam appears in the Exodus narrative in an Egyptian setting. No one reading has won.

Three syllables with the stress in the middle, which rhymes with "eye." The final h is silent and does the work of signaling that middle sound — Maria without it is usually read muh-REE-uh.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off
- The spelling tells people how to say it: the h steers readers to muh-RYE-uh rather than muh-REE-uh.
- Belongs to one of the largest name families in the world — Maria, Marie, Miriam, Maryam — so relatives in almost any language have a version of it.
- Unbroken presence in American records since the nineteenth century, so it reads as familiar rather than newly coined.
- Several short forms already in real use, including Mari, Ria and Mia, none of which need explaining.
- One singer has been so closely tied to this spelling since the 1990s that many people will mention her. That association is warm rather than awkward, but it comes up.
- Mariah and Maria will be swapped for each other on forms and in speech for life. Expect to correct both the letter and the vowel fairly often.
- Its strongest years were recent enough that the name currently sits with young adults more than with newborns — a child named Mariah is likely to be the only one in her class while meeting grown women who share it.
- The -iah ending is shared with a lot of currently fashionable names, so it may be heard as part of that group rather than as the old English reading of Maria that it actually is.
