The names themselves
Meaning, roots, sound and the people who carried each
Where each name comes from
Mariah
From Hebrew Miryam — most often read as "bitter," "beloved," or "rebellious"
Miryam is one of the oldest genuinely unsettled names in the Bible. The traditional Hebrew reading connects it to a root for bitterness; another long-standing reading gives "rebellious"; a third, favored by many modern scholars, traces it to the Egyptian element mry, "beloved," since Miriam appears in the Exodus narrative in an Egyptian setting. No one reading has won.
Miryam → Mariam → Maria → Mariah
How it traveled
The line begins with Miryam, sister of Moses in the Hebrew Bible, which the Greek translators rendered Mariam and Maria, and Latin carried onward as Maria — the name of Jesus's mother and, through her, one of the most widely given names in the Christian world. English took Maria in and pronounced it muh-RYE-uh, the ordinary reading in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, and Mariah is simply that pronunciation written down.
Mya
Generally read as a short spelling of Maya/Maia; the underlying roots compete
Maia is the Greek name of the eldest Pleiad, tied by ancient writers to a word for mother or nurse, and the month of May carries the same name. In Sanskrit, māyā means illusion or magic. Maya is also long established as a Hebrew given name. Separately, mya is the Burmese word for emerald and appears in Burmese names. A three-letter spelling inherits all of these rather than settling them.
Maia → Maya → Mya
How it traveled
The name behind this spelling runs back to Greek Maia, the eldest of the Pleiades and, in the myths, the mother of Hermes; Roman writers connected her to the month of May. Along a different road entirely, māyā is a Sanskrit word, and Maya has its own long life as a Hebrew name — three traditions that arrived at nearly the same sound independently.

Out loud, and in short
Mariah
muh-RYE-uh
Three syllables with the stress in the middle, which rhymes with "eye." The final h is silent and does the work of signaling that middle sound — Maria without it is usually read muh-REE-uh.
- Mari — The most common short form; also used as a standalone given name in Welsh and Norwegian.
- Ria — Informal, drawn from the end of the name; stands alone as a given name in Dutch and German.
- Riah — Informal, keeps the h of the full spelling.
- Mia — Informal shortening; very well established as an independent name in its own right.
- Also Ree.
Mya
MY-ah
Two syllables, stress on the first, rhyming with the second half of Sophia's cousin Maya. A minority of speakers see the spelling and try MEE-ah, mistaking it for Mia — expect to correct that occasionally.
- My — Informal clipping used within families; rarely written down.
- Mymy — A doubled pet form, mostly used by parents and siblings in early childhood.
- Mya-Mya — Reduplicated affectionate form heard at home rather than in school or on paper.

The trade-offs, name by name
Mariah
Strengths
- The spelling tells people how to say it: the h steers readers to muh-RYE-uh rather than muh-REE-uh.
- Belongs to one of the largest name families in the world — Maria, Marie, Miriam, Maryam — so relatives in almost any language have a version of it.
- Unbroken presence in American records since the nineteenth century, so it reads as familiar rather than newly coined.
To consider
- One singer has been so closely tied to this spelling since the 1990s that many people will mention her. That association is warm rather than awkward, but it comes up.
- Mariah and Maria will be swapped for each other on forms and in speech for life. Expect to correct both the letter and the vowel fairly often.
- Its strongest years were recent enough that the name currently sits with young adults more than with newborns — a child named Mariah is likely to be the only one in her class while meeting grown women who share it.
Mya
Strengths
- Three letters, two syllables, every sound plain in English — a child can write it early and say it clearly.
- Sits inside a large family of related names — Maya, Maia, Maja, Mia — so it reads as recognizable rather than invented anywhere in Europe.
- Charts in France as well as the United States, and the Maya form is at home in Hebrew, Polish, German and Greek.
To consider
- The spelling competes with Maya, Maia and Maja, and with Mia beside it. She will likely spell it aloud for life, and forms will sometimes come back with the a added.
- Because the name climbed and is now easing back, its bearers cluster heavily among teenagers and young adults rather than spreading evenly across the generations.
- At three letters it gives little to work with in a long surname or a hyphenated one; the whole name can end up very short. Some parents pair it with a longer middle name for balance.
