Audria
Feminine · “Old English Aethelthryth”
Tawdry is Saint Audrey. Cheap lace was sold at the fair held on her feast day at Ely and was called St Audrey's lace, which contracted to tawdry lace and then to tawdry on its own. A seventh-century abbess's name became an English word for shoddy goods.

The story of Audria
Aethelthryth was an East Anglian princess who married twice and, according to Bede, remained a virgin through both marriages, eventually leaving her second husband to found a monastery at Ely in 673. She died of a tumour on the neck, which she is said to have regarded as a punishment for the necklaces she had worn as a young woman. Her shrine became a major pilgrimage site and a fair was held on her feast day, at which necklaces and lace were sold, presumably with the story attached. By the sixteenth century the phrase was tawdry lace, and by the seventeenth tawdry meant cheap and showy on its own. The name meanwhile went from Aethelthryth through Etheldreda to Audrey, which is a considerable amount of wearing down, and both the word and the name descend from the same woman.
Meaning
Old English Aethelthryth, noble strength
Audrey descends from Old English Aethelthryth, from aethel, noble, and thryth, strength. Aethelthryth, or Etheldreda, was a seventh-century queen and abbess of Ely. The English word tawdry is a contraction of St Audrey's lace, sold at her fair. Audria is a modern variant with an -ia ending; it peaks in the American data in 1933.
