Marcelle
Feminine · “of Mars”
Marcelle is given to both — 5,414 girls and 507 boys since 1880. See Marcelle as a boy nameSee other names given to both
Marcelle is Marcus made small twice over and then given a French ending. Rome shortened its own names by adding endings rather than cutting letters, so Marcus became Marcellus — little Marcus — and Latin's diminutive traveled into French as Marcel. The extra syllable at the end is what French does to make a name a woman's, and it moves the stress there with it.

The story of Marcelle
Marcellus was a distinguished Roman name, carried by a general who took Syracuse and by a run of consuls, and it passed into Christian use through several early martyrs and a pope. French turned it into Marcel and built Marcelle beside it, which is the standard French way of pairing men's and women's names. Both crossed to America, Marcelle mostly through French-speaking families in Louisiana and New England, and it kept a real minority of boys in the American record — French-speaking families would not have used it that way, but English-speaking ones read the ending differently.
Meaning
of Mars
Marcus is one of the small handful of Roman first names, and it belongs to Mars, the god of war and, earlier, of agriculture and the spring — the month of March carries the same root. Marcellus adds a diminutive ending, so the whole name reads as little one of Mars, which is the sort of thing Roman families said affectionately rather than martially.

The Leda test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Marcelle's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Leda climbed just as high around 1904, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Leda's path sketches the road Marcelle is walking now.
Marcelle sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a genuine French name with an unbroken Latin line behind it, not a modern feminine invention.
- Marcy and Marc are both available, and they suit different children and different decades.
- The meaning is documented, short and easy to tell.
- It works for a child of either sex in the American record, which the French original does not.
- Marcel, Marcella and Marcelle will be used interchangeably by people writing quickly.
- It belongs to an older American generation, which is a virtue to some ears and a datedness to others.
- Most children given this spelling are girls, but a real minority are boys — enough that no roster should assume, and enough that a boy will not be alone.
