Maliek
Masculine · “Arabic malik”
The digraph ie is the least reliable vowel spelling in English. It says ee in chief, believe and field; it says eye in die, pie and tie; it says a short i in sieve and friend. There is no rule. Maliek uses it for a long ee, which is one of its legitimate values and not the one an English reader reaches for first.

The story of Maliek
English inherited its vowel spellings from a period when they made sense and then changed all the vowels. The ie digraph originally represented a diphthong that no longer exists, and when the Great Vowel Shift moved the long vowels of English between roughly 1400 and 1700, the spellings stayed where they were. That is why English has so many ways of writing one sound and so many sounds for one spelling. The ee of field and the eye of tie were once closer together and have moved apart. For a respelling this creates a real problem: a writer wanting a long ee has ee, ea, ie, ei, e-consonant-e and i in foreign names to choose from, and every one of them has a competing value. Maliek is unambiguous only to a reader who has already heard the name.
Meaning
Arabic malik, king
From the Arabic root m-l-k, associated with possession and rule, giving malik, a king, and mulk, dominion. Al-Malik, the Sovereign, is one of the ninety-nine names of God. Maliek is an American respelling of Malik, using ie for the long vowel; the doubled aa spelling Maalik represents a different word, malik with a long first vowel, meaning an owner or possessor. It peaks in 1997.

Pronouncing Maliek
mah-LEEK
Two syllables, stress on the second, long second vowel. Some readers say MAY-lee-ek, giving the ie two syllables, which the spelling permits. The Arabic malik has a short first vowel and the stress may fall on either syllable depending on dialect.

The Lauro test

Maliek's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lauro climbed just as high around 1933, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lauro's path sketches the road Maliek is walking now.
