Malakye
Masculine · “Hebrew malachi”
Malachi may not be a name. The last book of the Hebrew Bible is titled from a word in its own first verse, malachi, which means my messenger, and scholars have argued for centuries about whether that is a person's name or a description of an anonymous prophet. A whole book of scripture may be attributed to a job title.

The story of Malakye
The Hebrew word malach and the Greek angelos both mean messenger, and neither started out religious. An angel in the Bible is not a category of being but a job: someone sent. The translators of the Greek Old Testament used angelos for both human and divine messengers, and it was the later Christian tradition that narrowed the word to the winged sort. The same root gives Arabic malak, an angel, and Hebrew melacha, work, in the sense of what is sent out or dispatched. The book itself is short, four chapters, and closes the Christian Old Testament, which is why the name sits at a hinge in the printed Bible. As an English given name it was picked up by Puritans and revived in America in the 1990s, and the respelled Malakye peaks in 2011.

Hebrew malachi, my messenger
From Hebrew malach, a messenger or angel, with the first-person possessive ending: my messenger. Whether it functions as a personal name in the book of Malachi is disputed, and the ancient Greek translators evidently thought not, rendering the phrase as his messenger rather than treating it as a name. The book is anonymous either way. Malakye is a modern American respelling with a y for the final i and a k for the ch.

Pronouncing Malakye
MAL-uh-ky
Three syllables, stress on the first, with the last rhyming with sky. The ch of the standard spelling is said as k, since it transliterates a Hebrew letter through Greek chi. The respelling with k removes that difficulty.
