Lyllian looks like it was built from the flower and probably was not. Lilian existed in medieval England as an affectionate form of Elizabeth, which is a longer and stranger road than lily, and it was only later that the two were assumed to be the same thing. The y in this spelling makes the flower harder to see, which is a small irony.

Where it comes from

The story of Lyllian

Medieval English was inventive with Elizabeth, producing dozens of short forms, and several of them became independent names before anyone noticed where they came from. Lilian is one. It was in use for centuries before the Victorian fashion for flower names arrived and gave it a second and entirely separate justification, at which point the two histories merged and the older one was largely forgotten. The doubled l and the y are much later American additions. The y in particular is doing what y does throughout twentieth-century American naming: marking one family's version as its own without altering a sound.

Two roads. The older one runs through Elizabeth: medieval English produced Lilian and Lillian as pet forms of it, by the same reduction that gave Libby and Lisbeth, and the flower had nothing to do with it. The newer one runs straight from lilium, the Latin for lily, which English naming took up along with Rose, Violet and Daisy. Both are real and both are in use, and the spelling cannot say which a family meant. The flower reading is now the common assumption, which does not make it the origin.

LIL-ee-un

LIL-ee-un, three syllables, stress at the front, the y sounded as a short i. A reader who takes the y as a long i will produce LYE-lee-un, which is not a reading anyone uses, but the spelling invites it and cannot prevent it.

About 1 girl in 339 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Lyllian itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The sound is entirely familiar and has been in English use for many centuries.
  • It has two genuine origins available, and one of them is far more interesting than the flower.
  • Lily and Lil are both waiting inside it and both are complete names.
What to consider
  • Lillian is the standard spelling and this one will be rewritten as that on nearly every document.
  • The y can be misread as a long i, so the name gets mispronounced as well as respelled.
  • Lilian, Lillian, Lilliana and Lyllian all sound alike, and the spelling has to be given every time.
