Gemini is Latin for twins, and it names a constellation, a zodiac sign and, for a few years in the nineteen-sixties, the American spacecraft built to carry two people at once. The two bright stars in the constellation are Castor and Pollux, and the Greeks and Romans told the same story about them: brothers who refused to be separated, one mortal and one not.

The story of Gemini
The constellation was recognized long before Greece, but it is Greek storytelling that fixed the names: Castor and Pollux, half-brothers born from the same night, one the son of a king and one the son of Zeus. When Castor died, Pollux gave up half his immortality rather than be parted, and the two were set in the sky together. Rome kept the pair as protectors of sailors and horsemen and kept the plural name. Astrology inherited the sign; astronomy inherited the stars. In the nineteen-sixties NASA borrowed the word for the two-seat spacecraft that flew between the one-man Mercury flights and the three-man Apollo missions, which is where most Americans first met it as a word rather than a horoscope.
Meaning
twins
Gemini is the plural of the Latin geminus, twin or doubled — the same word behind geminate and, further back, behind the word for a pair born together. It is grammatically a plural, which makes it one of the very few given names that names two of something. Nothing about the meaning is unclear. What the name carries beyond the meaning is the constellation, the sign, and the story of the Dioscuri attached to both.

Pronouncing Gemini
JEM-uh-nye
JEM-uh-nye is the English saying, with the last syllable rhyming on eye. Classical Latin would have said GEH-mih-nee with a hard g, and a few people do. The English version is overwhelmingly the one in use, and it is the one the spacecraft and the horoscope column both taught.

The Madia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Gemini's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Madia climbed just as high around 1916, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Madia's path sketches the road Gemini is walking now.
Gemini sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Every English speaker already knows the word, so it is never mispronounced and almost never misspelled.
- It goes to boys and girls both, and the meaning gives no reason to prefer either.
- It carries a constellation, a myth and a spaceflight program in seven letters, all of them real.
- The zodiac sign arrives first for most people, and a child born under any other sign will be asked about it for life.
- It is grammatically a plural — twins, not twin — which is a small oddity for a single child and an obvious remark for anyone who knows Latin.
- Astrology attaches a whole personality description to this word, and the child will be handed it whether or not the family believes any of it.
