The story of Lorence
The laurel crown was the prize at the Pythian games and became the Roman mark of a triumph, and the medieval universities revived it for graduates, which is where baccalaureate comes from, bacca lauri, a laurel berry. English kings had employed versifiers for centuries, but the office was regularised when Charles II appointed John Dryden in 1668 with a salary of two hundred pounds and a butt of canary wine. The wine was dropped in 1790 at the request of Henry Pye, who preferred the money, and restored in 1984 when Ted Hughes accepted a case of sherry a year instead. The post has been held by Wordsworth, Tennyson, who held it longest, and Betjeman, and it was refused by Gray, Scott and Graves. Tennyson's forty-two years remain the record.
