Where it comes from

The story of Liseth

Suffix borrowing works the same way everywhere: a name becomes common enough that its ending is heard as a detachable piece, and speakers begin attaching it to other openings. What makes the Colombian -eth case unusual is that the source ending is not a suffix in its own language at all. In Elizabeth the -eth is the tail of a Hebrew word, sheva, an oath, and it means nothing on its own. Spanish speakers, meeting the name through English and finding the ending unfamiliar and attractive, treated it as available, and it now appears on stems that have no Hebrew behind them: Yaneth from Jeanette, Yuleth from Julia, Marleth from Marlene. The result is a set of names that look English to a Colombian and Colombian to anyone else, built from a fragment that was never a unit in either language.

Hebrew Elisheva, my God is an oath

Liseth is most likely built from Elizabeth, Hebrew Elisheva, whose second element is genuinely disputed between oath and abundance. The form takes the middle and end of the name and drops the opening, and the -eth ending has become independently productive in Colombian and Ecuadorian naming. The American peak is 1999.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Liseth went to 10 girls in 2025, but Lizeth is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 95, which makes it the 865th most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,592 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 16,919 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Liseth itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Lis works as a short form.
  • Elizabeth is available as the parent name.
  • Six letters and two syllables, compact and clear in Spanish.
What to consider
  • Spanish and English say the ending completely differently.
  • Lisseth and Liset compete as spellings.
  • It is unfamiliar outside Colombian and Ecuadorian communities.
