Lianne is a French-shaped name with three possible parents and no way to tell them apart. It may be a clipping of Juliane or Éliane, it may be Li- plus the -anne ending that French uses everywhere, and it may be the French word liane, a climbing vine. All three are live and the spelling settles nothing.

When was the name Lianne most popular?

Where it comes from

The story of Lianne

French naming produces a great many -anne compounds, and the pattern is genuinely productive: Marianne, Julianne, Roxanne, Suzanne, Lianne. The second element is Anne, which had been one of the most-used French women's names for centuries and by the twentieth century functioned partly as an ending. Lianne is the shortest of the family and the one whose front element is least identifiable. It entered American use in the 1950s and peaked in 1960, alongside Dianne, Suzanne and Julianne, all of which were at their height in the same years.

Uncertain: a clipping of Juliane or Éliane, or the French word for a climbing vine

Éliane comes from a Roman family name Aelianus, of uncertain origin. Juliane comes from Julius. Liane is a real French noun for a tropical climbing plant, borrowed into English as liana. Anne is Hebrew Hannah, grace. Any of these could be behind a given Lianne, and the American records do not distinguish.

Lianne sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1960, with 70 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lianne went to 15 girls in 2025, but Liane and Lyanne are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 32, which makes it the 928th most-given girls’ name of the year — 6,205 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 50,227 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 107,151 for Lianne itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • The -anne family is entirely familiar and needs no explanation.
  • It is short, two syllables, and soft throughout.
  • Annie is a ready-made short form with a long history.
What to consider
  • The origin is genuinely unresolved between three candidates.
  • Liane, Lianne, Leanne and Leigh Anne are all in use and are not quite the same name.
  • The 1960 peak dates it to a specific American generation.
