The story of Lelia
The Laelii were a Roman family known chiefly through Gaius Laelius, a friend of Scipio and the title figure of Cicero's dialogue on friendship — which is why the name survived the empire in a way most gens names did not. Renaissance and later writers picked it up as a literary name, and nineteenth-century America used it in modest but steady numbers, alongside Delia, Celia and Amelia, peaking around 1900.
Meaningnot established
Not established
From the Roman family name Laelius, whose origin is not recovered. Roman gens names were often Etruscan or pre-Latin and frequently resist explanation. Some accounts connect the English name instead to a clipping of Amelia, Delia or Cordelia, in which case it inherits those meanings rather than having one of its own.
