Lawayne
Masculine · “Old English waegn”
Lawayne is overwhelmingly a boys’ name — 569 boys against 10 girls since 1880.
Wayne is a wagon. Old English waegn gave the surname for a wagon maker's man, and it was an ordinary and unremarkable name until 1930, when a film studio gave it to a contract actor born Marion Morrison. Within twenty years it was in the American top twenty, and Lawayne is what happens when a prefix is added to a name that was itself assigned by a studio.

Our story of Lawayne
Our reading is that Lawayne sits at the intersection of two American naming inventions, and both are datable. The first is the studio name. Marion Morrison was renamed by Fox in 1930 after a Revolutionary War general, and the surname Wayne, previously rare as a first name, entered the top hundred within a decade of his becoming a star. The second is the La- prefix, which appears in African American naming from the 1920s and 30s and is the earliest of the productive American prefixes, older than De-, Ja- or Ke-. Putting them together produces a name that is entirely of the mid twentieth century: an English wagon word, assigned to an actor by a marketing department, and given a prefix by a naming tradition that was building its own vocabulary at exactly the same moment. Neither half would have been available thirty years earlier.
Meaning
Old English waegn, a wagon or cart
Lawayne joins the American La- prefix to Wayne, an English surname from Old English waegn, a wagon, given to a carter or wagon maker. The prefix carries no meaning in any language; it is the oldest layer of American prefix coinage, appearing in the records from the 1920s. Wayne carries its own settled meaning but the compound does not inherit it in any useful sense. It peaks in 1940.

Lawayne's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Juel climbed just as high around 1913, and its whole arc is on record.
