Where it comes from

The story of Lakin

Between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries English borrowed the diminutive suffix -kin from across the North Sea and applied it enthusiastically to men's names, producing forms that were nicknames in their own day and are surnames now: Wilkin, Simkin, Dawkin, Hankin, Lawkin. Almost none of them survives as a living pet name, so the suffix is invisible to modern speakers even though it is sitting in a dozen extremely common surnames. Lakin is one of them. Its use as an American girls' given name is modern and belongs to the general movement of surnames into girls' names, with a best year of 1996.

Meaningscholars disagree

little Lawrence, from a Roman name meaning of Laurentum

The English surname Lakin is generally derived from Lawkin, a diminutive of Lawrence with the -kin suffix. Lawrence descends from Latin Laurentius, from the town of Laurentum, whose own name is usually connected to laurus, the bay tree. A second route derives the surname from a Middle English word for play or sport. The -kin ending is not disputed.

Lakin sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1996, with 94 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Lakin went to 17 girls in 2025, but Lakyn and Lakynn are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 175, which makes it the 785th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,761 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 9,184 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Lakin itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths

  • Lake is available as a short form and is currently fashionable.
  • Five letters and no spelling ambiguity.
What to consider
  • Laken and Lakin both circulate and are said differently by some families.
  • The first vowel is long or short depending on which spelling a reader knows.
  • As a surname-derived girls' name it dates to the last thirty years.
