Where it comes from

The story of Kyle

Scottish topographic surnames crossed to America and became given names in the ordinary way, and Kyle was in modest use for both sexes through the first half of the twentieth century. Its female side peaked in 1951 and declined thereafter; the male side then rose steeply from the 1970s and became one of the defining American boys' names of the 1980s and 1990s. That order is unusual. The normal sequence is male first, then unisex, then female, then the boys leave, as happened to Whitney, Ashley and Shannon. Kyle went the other way, and there is no settled account of why.

Meaning

a narrow strait or channel

From Scottish Gaelic caol, narrow, used as a noun for a strait or a narrow stretch of water; the Kyle of Lochalsh and the Kyles of Bute are the obvious examples. It is also a district of Ayrshire and a surname from both sources. The word is the same one behind Caolan and the Irish caol.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kyle went to 17 girls in 2025, but Kylee and Khylee are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 345, which makes it the 636th most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,910 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 4,659 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,545 for Kyle itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
