Where it comes from

The story of Klaudia

The Roman cognomen was originally a nickname attached to a branch of a clan, and a remarkable number of them name physical peculiarities. Claudius is lame. Cicero comes from cicer, a chickpea, said to refer to a wart on an ancestor's nose; when advised to change it before entering politics he said he would make it more famous than the Metelli. Naso is nose, Nasica sharp-nosed, Crassus fat, Balbus a stammerer, Caecus blind, Strabo cross-eyed, Rufus red-haired, Longus tall, Brutus stupid. These were inherited, so a slender man could be called Crassus and a sighted one Caecus, and the names were sources of pride precisely because they were ancestral. Modern surnames do the same thing more quietly: Cameron is a crooked nose in Gaelic and Campbell a crooked mouth.

Meaning

Latin claudus, lame

Klaudia is the Polish and Hungarian form of Claudia, the feminine of the Roman family name Claudius, from claudus, lame. The K spelling is required in Polish, where the letter c is said ts and cannot represent a k sound in native words. The emperor Claudius, who had a limp and a stammer, bore the name that describes it. The American peak is 1997.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Klaudia went to 10 girls in 2025, but Claudia is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 229, which makes it the 733rd most-given girls’ name of the year — 8,724 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 7,019 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 160,727 for Klaudia itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
