Kendal is a striking place name because it contains no English: the river name is Brittonic, from the Celtic language spoken in northern England before the Anglo-Saxons, and dalr is Norse, from the Viking settlement. Three peoples held that valley and the English who ended up there kept the other two languages' words for it. Kendyl is four spellings and a thousand years from that.
