Where it comes from

The story of Roseanna

Rose as a name entered England from two directions: the Norman Roese and Rohese, which are Germanic compounds with no flower in them, and the later devotional use of the flower itself. By the eighteenth century the flower had taken over entirely. Roseanna and Rosanna appear in English and American records from that period and were well used through the nineteenth century.

Meaningscholars disagree

rose; grace

Anna is documented: from Hebrew Hannah, grace. The Rose- element is genuinely double — Latin rosa, the flower, and Germanic hros, a horse, or hrod, fame, which stand behind Rosalind and Rosamund. Which a compound carries depends on its age.
