Our story of Brecken
Ours, offered as ours. Irish breac is a busy word: it means speckled, and from it come the word for a trout, the word for a checked cloth, and Saint Breacán of Aran. The Scottish breacan is a tartan plaid, which is where English gets breeks and, at a distance, breeches. Brecken in American records probably comes from a Colorado ski resort instead, and the Irish word is the more interesting ancestor.

speckled, freckled
Irish breac means speckled or freckled and gives the personal name Breacán and the word for a tartan plaid, which English took as breeks. Whether the modern name descends from it or from the place name Breckenridge is not documented.

The Ronya test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Brecken's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Ronya climbed just as high around 1967, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Ronya's path sketches the road Brecken is walking now.
