Our story of Elida
Ours, offered as ours. Elis in the western Peloponnese was the small state that ran Olympia and the games, and it had a peculiar constitutional position: a sacred truce was declared for the festival and Elis was treated as inviolable during it. Whether the Spanish-language Elida has anything to do with the place is unrecorded, and the likelier ancestor is the Germanic Alida, from adal, noble. Both are worth naming.

Not established
Readings offered include a development of Germanic Alida, itself a short form of Adelheid, noble; a Spanish form of Elis; and a variant of Élida from Greek. None is established. Elida is also a Norwegian name from a poem.

The Norine test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Elida's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Norine climbed just as high around 1912, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Norine's path sketches the road Elida is walking now.
Elida sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Eli and Lida are both complete short forms in their own right.

- Genuine early twentieth-century American use behind it.
- The stress differs between the accented and unaccented Spanish spellings.
- Elida, Alida and Aleida are all in use and get confused.
- The meaning is genuinely unsettled.
