Norine
Feminine · “honor”
Nora was cut from two long names at once. Honora is Latin for honor used directly as a name; Eleanor is a different name entirely, of disputed origin; and both shed their fronts to leave Nora. Norine adds the -ine ending to that, which was the standard American way of turning a short name into a longer one.

The story of Norine
Ireland took Honora up in quantity — it was one of the most-used women's names there for several centuries — and Nora went with the emigration to America. The -ine ending then did what it did to a dozen short names of the period: Norine, Doreen, Maureen, Pauline, Corinne. Some of those endings are the Irish diminutive spelled -een and some are the French -ine, and they are impossible to tell apart once anglicized, which is why the two traditions are permanently confused in American records.

honor
Latin honor is an abstract noun used directly as a name — Honora and Honoria were in use in the late Roman world and became particularly common in Ireland, where Nora and Norah are still associated with them. Eleanor is the other road and its own origin has never been settled, with proposals from Provencal and from Arabic that neither convince. A clipping of two names inherits cleanly from neither.

Pronouncing Norine
nor-EEN
nor-EEN, two syllables, stress at the back, the ending fully sounded. Some say NOR-een with the weight at the front, and both are heard. The -ine and -een spellings are identical in speech, which is the root of the confusion.

Fashion outlook
Norine sits outside the current charts, and that is its own kind of answer: naming cycles can only date the names they carried up. A name this rare has no decade stamped on it — it cannot go out of fashion, because it was never in.

The trade-off
- Nora is available as a short form and is a complete name with a documented Latin meaning.
- The -ine ending is written the way it is said, with nothing left to convention.
- Two syllables with the stress at the end, which balances a front-stressed surname.
- Noreen is the more common spelling and this will be rewritten as that.
- The stress falls at either end depending on the speaker.
- The name belongs firmly to an earlier American century and has not returned.
