Kelley
Masculine · “Irish ceallach”
Kelley is given to both — 6,286 boys and 46,099 girls since 1880. See Kelley as a girl nameSee other names given to both
Kelly is one of the commonest surnames in Ireland and nobody is sure what it means. That is not unusual: the commonest names are often the least explicable, because heavy use wears a word down and removes the evidence a linguist would need. Rarity preserves; frequency erodes.

The story of Kelley
Frequency is the enemy of etymology. A rare name is spoken carefully, written by people consulting a record, and preserved in the form it had; a very common one is said quickly, written from memory, and reshaped by every sound change the language undergoes. It also attracts folk explanations, which accumulate and get into books. The Irish surname stock illustrates this well: the rarest names often have clear derivations, while Kelly, Murphy, Byrne and Ryan, the largest, are all argued over. A second complication is that several unrelated families may end up under one anglicized spelling, since English clerks flattened distinctions Irish kept. So Kelly in America may descend from more than one Irish name, and the question of what it means may not have a single answer even in principle.

Irish ceallach, meaning disputed
From the Irish O Ceallaigh, descendant of Ceallach. The personal name Ceallach has been read as bright-headed, as strife or contention, and as frequenting churches, from cill, a church. None commands agreement and the three proposals point in quite different directions. Kelley is a spelling variant of Kelly and is used more often for boys in the United States, where the plain -y spelling drifted female after the 1960s. It peaks in 1968.

The Denzil test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kelley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Denzil climbed just as high around 1937, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Denzil's path sketches the road Kelley is walking now.
