The story of Kelley
The Ó Ceallaigh families were prominent across medieval Ireland, and emigration made Kelly one of the commonest Irish surnames in America. Irish surnames became American given names in quantity in the twentieth century — Ryan, Casey, Riley, Kelly — usually for boys first. Kelly crossed to girls in the 1950s and generated four spellings within twenty years; Kelley peaked in the early 1970s and remains the least common of them.

Not established
From the Irish surname Ó Ceallaigh, 'descendant of Ceallach'. The personal name Ceallach is genuinely disputed between 'bright-headed', 'strife' and a reading connecting it to a word for a church. The surname is thoroughly documented; the name behind it is not.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Dixie test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kelley's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Dixie climbed just as high around 1938, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Dixie's path sketches the road Kelley is walking now.
Kelley sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- A documented medieval Irish family behind it, which is real depth for a surname-name.
- The -ey ending matches the surname's own traditional look.
- Bright and quick, with no pronunciation risk.
- Four spellings were in use at once and Kelly is much the commonest.
- The meaning of the Irish name behind the surname is genuinely unsettled.
