Our story of Dixie
The four usual explanations are these. A New Orleans bank issued ten-dollar notes marked with the French word for ten, and the notes were called dixies. The surveyors' line dividing free states from slave states was named for two Englishmen, and their name shortened. A New York landowner of that name supposedly treated enslaved people well, and the word became a byword for a comfortable place. Or it is simply an alteration of something else entirely. Etymologists have examined all four for a century without settling it, and the first has slightly the best evidence and is still not proved. What is certain is that the word became the name of a region and of everything that region argues about.

Not established
The word's origin is genuinely open. It may come from a banknote, from a surveyor's line, from a French word, or from a landowner's name, and the evidence for each is thin. The name carries whichever of those a family believed, if any.

The Lorene test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dixie's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Lorene climbed just as high around 1920, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Lorene's path sketches the road Dixie is walking now.
Dixie sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is read correctly at first sight and never needs spelling out loud.
- It is recorded for boys and for girls, so it does not force a reading on anyone.
- It is short, quick to write and easy for a child to learn.
- The word is the name of the Confederate South in American usage and carries every argument attached to that.
- It reads as an affectionate form to some people, so formal settings will ask what it stands for.
- No origin is documented, so the meaning question has four candidates and no answer.
