The story of Keani
Hawaiian builds names from ordinary phrases and keeps the grammar visible, which is why so many of them start with ke or ka: the article is part of the name, not a decoration. That is a genuine structural feature and it is worth distinguishing from the American Ke- prefix of Keshawn, Kemon and Keyanna, which is a free syllable with no content and came from an entirely different tradition. The two look identical on an American page. Keani appears in United States records from the 1990s, with a best year of 2007, and both routes are represented in it.
Meaningscholars disagree
the breeze, or the beckoning
Hawaiian ke is one of the two forms of the definite article, and ani is a verb meaning to blow softly or to beckon. Ke ani would therefore give the breeze or the beckoning, and that reading is plausible for a genuinely Hawaiian bearer. Many American Keanis are instead built from the American Ke- prefix and a free ending, and carry no meaning at all. The spelling cannot distinguish them.

The Marjan test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Keani's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Marjan climbed just as high around 1949, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Marjan's path sketches the road Keani is walking now.
Keani sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
