Our reading is that Kaylan documents a piece of traffic in the American naming system that usually runs the other way. Endings do move between the sexes, but the movement is lopsided. A masculine ending given to girls tends to stay and then to take the whole name with it, so that within two generations the name is female only; the reverse almost never happens, because a name that has become female is not given back. Kaylan is caught in the act. The stem is unambiguously from the female Kayla family, the ending is unambiguously from the male Dylan family, and the result is a name that reads as feminine to most Americans and as ambiguous to some. It peaks in 1997, alongside the Kayla wave that supplied its front half, and it is worth noting that the alternative spellings, Kaylin and Kaylyn, remove the borrowed ending entirely and are more common.
