Where it comes from

The story of Kaylan

Caolán is well attested in Ireland, borne by several early saints and carried into modern use through the surname Ó Caoláin. Its anglicized spellings reached America with Irish emigration and stayed rare. The Kaylan spelling is a different arrival: it enters American records in quantity only in the late 1980s and 1990s, in step with Kayla, Kaylee, Kaylin and Kaylyn, and it was given to girls as well as boys. The boys' peak in the mid-1990s belongs to that wave rather than to the Irish one.

Slender one, if Irish

Irish Caolán is a diminutive of caol, slender, and belongs to a documented family of names anglicized as Kealan, Keelan and Kaelan. The Kaylan spelling, which peaked in the mid-1990s alongside Kayla and Kaylee, cannot be shown to descend from it; it fits the American pattern of a Kay- opening with a -lan or -lyn ending far better than it fits Irish orthography. Both readings are in circulation and neither can be ruled out.

Kaylan sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1995, with 36 boys. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kaylan went to 18 boys in 2025, but Kailan is the same name said out loud. Together the 2 spellings went to 46, which makes it the 882nd most-given boys’ name of the year — 4,326 places above the chart.

About 1 boy in 37,132 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 94,893 for Kaylan itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is easy to say and easy to spell after one hearing.
  • It has a genuine Irish namesake available if a family wants one.
  • It is uncommon on boys without being unrecognizable.
What to consider
  • The Kay- opening is strongly associated with girls' names of the same decades.
  • Kaylen, Kaylan, Kalan and Kaelan all exist and will be confused with each other.
  • The Irish meaning is not securely attached to this spelling.
