Roger came to England with the Normans and became one of the commonest men's names in the country — common enough that it entered the language as a generic term and, much later, as the radio acknowledgement, which comes from R for 'received' in an early phonetic alphabet. English speakers naturally insert a d before the soft g, and Rodger is the spelling that records it. American use peaked in the mid-1940s alongside Roger itself.
