Where it comes from

The story of Alexi

Alexios was a Byzantine imperial name and Alexei a Russian one, carried by tsars and by a much-venerated saint who is said to have lived unrecognised under his own father's stairs. The Orthodox world uses it heavily. Meanwhile French has Alexis, which English took as a unisex name in the nineteen-eighties. Alexi is a spelling between the two, appearing in American records for boys and girls alike and often as a clipping of Alexander or Alexandra.

Meaning

defender; one who wards off

Greek alexein, to defend or ward off, gives Alexios, the helper or defender, and the same verb opens Alexander, defender of men. The connection is direct and has never been disputed.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • Alex is available as a short form that needs no explaining anywhere on earth.
  • The meaning is settled and can be stated in two words.
  • It works in Russian, Greek, French and English households alike.
What to consider
  • Alexi, Alexei, Alexis and Aleksi are all in use and get written for one another.
  • It is used for both sexes, so paperwork does not always guess right.
  • The Russian pronunciation is quite different, so families with Russian relatives will hear two names.
