The story of Kelby
The Danish settlement of eastern England left its vocabulary in the map, and -by is the clearest marker of it: where the villages end in -by, Norse speakers were farming. Kelby is one of them, and a spring was worth naming a settlement for. The surname crossed to America and became a first name in the twentieth century, part of the broad American movement of English surnames to the front, and it rose modestly in the nineteen-eighties and nineties.
Meaning

The Durwood test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kelby's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Durwood climbed just as high around 1944, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Durwood's path sketches the road Kelby is walking now.
Kelby sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.
