Where it comes from

The story of Kelby

The Scandinavian settlement of England in the ninth and tenth centuries left its clearest trace in place names, and the distribution is startlingly precise. Names in -by, -thorpe, -thwaite and -toft are dense in Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, Nottinghamshire and Cumbria and almost absent in Wessex, which is exactly the territory ceded to Danish rule by the treaty between Alfred and Guthrum. Lincolnshire alone has over two hundred -by names. The word survives in English as the by of bylaw, originally a town law. Kelby entered American given-name use in the 1980s surname-name wave, and the female figures peak in 1991.

Old Norse "farm by the spring" or "Kel's farm"

From Old Norse býr, a farm or settlement, with a first element variously read as kelda, a spring or well, or a personal name Kel. The English place names Kelby and Keelby are both attested in Lincolnshire. As a modern given name it is an American surname adoption, used for both sexes, with no separate meaning.

Kelby sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1991, with 90 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The trade-off

Practical strengths
  • It is a genuine English place-name surname with a documented Norse element.
  • It is short, two syllables and read correctly on sight.
  • Kel works as a short form for either sex.
What to consider
  • It reads as unisex, so it does not signal sex on its own.
  • The first element of the place name is genuinely uncertain.
  • It is rare enough to need spelling out.
