The story of Jens
John reached Scandinavia with Christianity and was reduced in every language: Jens in Danish and Norwegian, Jan and Hans elsewhere, Jon in Icelandic. It became the commonest Danish man's name and gave rise to the surname Jensen, one of the most numerous in Denmark. Danish and Norwegian emigrants brought it to the American Midwest in large numbers in the nineteenth century, which is where it appears in the records.
