Katja
Feminine
Katja is Katya written the way German and the Slavic languages write it. The j there is not a j at all — in those alphabets it spells the sound English writes as y, so Katja is KAT-ya and always has been. It is the standard affectionate form of Katharina and Yekaterina across a very large part of Europe.

From Aikaterine to Katja
The story of Katja
Catherine spread through medieval Europe on the strength of a saint's legend and became one of the handful of names every Christian country used. Each language then made its own affectionate form, and the Slavic and German ones converged: Russian Yekaterina gives Katya, German Katharina gives Katja, and the two are written identically once the Cyrillic is romanized. American use of the spelling comes from both directions — German and Dutch families on one side, Russian and Slavic ones on the other — and it arrives already complete, which is why it has never picked up an American variant of its own.

Not established
Greek Aikaterine is the source and its meaning has never been established. The famous reading, pure, comes from katharos — but that connection was made centuries after the name existed, by Christian writers who liked it, and it was strong enough to change the spelling: the th in Katharine and Katherine was inserted to make the false etymology visible. The original name has no th. What it did mean is unknown; a link to the goddess Hecate has been proposed and cannot be shown. This is one of the clearest cases in naming of a meaning being applied rather than found.

Pronouncing Katja
KAT-ya
KAT-ya, two syllables, stress at the front, the j sounded as a y. English readers who have not met the convention will produce KAT-juh, treating the j as English — that is the single most common thing that happens to this name in America, and it happens on first reading almost every time.

Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. The trade-off
- It is a complete, standard name across Germany, the Netherlands, Russia and most of Slavic Europe.
- Kat is a ready short form that works perfectly in English.
- The spelling is correct in its own languages rather than being an American respelling of anything.
- English has no rule that turns j into y, so the name will be mispronounced by nearly everyone who reads it before hearing it.
- Katya is the spelling that removes the problem, and it will be substituted by people trying to be helpful.
- It reads as distinctly European in American rooms, which is either what a family wants or a conversation they will keep having.
