Sophya
Feminine · “wisdom”
Sophya is Sophia written the way Russian writes it. Sofya is the standard Russian form, and transliterating it into English gives this shape — a y where the second vowel is, and the ph or f depending on the system used. The word underneath is Greek and it means wisdom, and it named the greatest church in the eastern world.

The story of Sophya
Hagia Sophia was built in the sixth century and was the largest interior space in the world for the better part of a thousand years, and its dedication to Holy Wisdom made the word enormously visible across the eastern church. The name spread through Byzantine and then Slavic Christianity, which is why it has been continuously used in Russia, Greece and the Balkans in a way it was not in the West until much later. Sofya is the Russian form, and Sophya is one of the ways English writes it — the ph is Greek and the y is Russian, which makes the spelling a small collision of two transliteration traditions.
Meaning
wisdom
Greek sophia is the ordinary word for wisdom or skill, and it is the second half of philosophy — the love of it. The name was not originally a person's: early Christian writers used Holy Wisdom as a title for a divine attribute, and the great church in Constantinople, Hagia Sophia, was dedicated to that rather than to a saint named Sophia. A martyr of the name appears later. The word is not disputed and the name carries it whole.

so-FEE-uh, three syllables, stress in the middle, the y sounded as a long e. Russian says SOF-ya in two, with the weight at the front and the y doing consonant work — a genuinely different rhythm, and the one this spelling comes from.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. The Kally test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Sophya's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Kally climbed just as high around 1990, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Kally's path sketches the road Sophya is walking now.
Sophya sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The meaning is a single clear word, settled, and among the most attractive a name can carry.
- Sonya and Sophie are both waiting inside it and both are complete names.
- It is used continuously across Greece, Russia, Italy and most of Europe without translation.
- Sophia and Sofia are both far more common, and this spelling will be rewritten as one of them.
- The y can be read as a long e or as a consonant, so the syllable count is not settled by the spelling.
- The name is very widely used in its standard forms, so the distinctive spelling is the only thing that distinguishes it in a room.
