Kally
Feminine
Kally is overwhelmingly a girls’ name — 1,387 girls against 5 boys since 1880.
Kally is a short form without a settled long one. It can shorten Caroline, Catherine, Calista, Kalinda or nothing at all, and in most households it shortens nothing — it was given whole. That is an ordinary thing for a name of this shape to be, and it is worth saying plainly rather than inventing a parent name for it.

Origin, sound and short forms
The story of Kally
English has always made short names by clipping long ones and then letting the clippings go free, and by the nineteenth century a great many of them were being given as names in their own right: Nellie, Hattie, Sadie, Callie. The parent name gradually became optional and then irrelevant. Kally belongs to the American continuation of that habit, with the K substituted for the C — a change that did nothing to the sound and a great deal to the look, and that spread across dozens of names in the twentieth century. The name goes to girls almost entirely, though it is on record for boys, where it reads as a shortening of Kalvin or Kaleb.
Meaningnot established
Not established
No meaning can be assigned, because no single source can be. Caroline goes back to a Germanic word for a free man; Catherine's own origin is argued and probably older than the Greek explanation attached to it; Calista is Greek for most beautiful. A name that could be short for any of these inherits from none of them with confidence. Worth noting separately: Kali is also the name of a major goddess in Hinduism, spelled the same way in English and completely unrelated in origin — a coincidence of transliteration rather than a connection.
Pronouncing Kally
KAL-ee
KAL-ee, two syllables, stress at the front, the first vowel short. The double l makes the reading unambiguous in a way that Kaly or Kaley would not, which is the one genuine advantage this spelling has over its neighbors.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kally went to 5 girls in 2025, but Kali, Cali and Kalli and the rest below are the same name said out loud. Together the 7 spellings went to 1,609, which makes it the 205th most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,737 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 999 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Kally itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Elyce test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Kally's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Elyce climbed just as high around 1954, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Elyce's path sketches the road Kally is walking now.
Kally sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- The double l fixes the vowel, so the name is said correctly on first reading.
- Five letters, two syllables, and nothing silent — about as economical as a name gets.
- It works for either child, and it is short enough to carry any surname.
- Callie is the far more common spelling of the same name, and this one will be rewritten as that by default.
- It reads unmistakably as a nickname, which matters more on a document than in a room, and there is no agreed long form to fall back on.
- The spelling is shared with a Hindu goddess when written as Kali, and while the two are unrelated, the resemblance gets noticed.
