Dyanna
Feminine · “divine”
Dyanna is Diana with two American adjustments: a y where the first i was, and a doubled n in the middle. Neither changes a sound. The name underneath is among the oldest in continuous Western use — the Roman goddess of the hunt and the moon, whose name was built from the word for the bright daytime sky.

The story of Dyanna
Diana was a major Roman deity with major Roman temples, and her cult absorbed the Greek Artemis wholesale, which is why the two are so often described as one. The name survived the empire as a word for the moon and as a literary figure, went quiet while saints' names dominated Christian Europe, and came back with the Renaissance, when classical names stopped sounding pagan and started sounding educated. English took it up in that spirit and has kept it ever since. The Dyanna spelling belongs to a much later and much more local habit: through the middle of the twentieth century American parents routinely swapped y for i inside familiar names — Kathryn, Karyn, Bryan, Lynn — and doubled interior consonants for weight. Both moves are visible here, and both are silent.
Meaning
divine; of the bright sky
Diana descends from an Italic root meaning bright or heavenly — the same root behind dies, the Latin word for day, and behind the older form of Jupiter's name. The goddess attached herself to it afterward: wild country, hunting, the moon. The doubled n and the y are twentieth-century American spelling decisions and carry no sense of their own. Whatever Diana means, Dyanna means, exactly and without dilution.

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Dyanna went to 5 girls in 2025, but Diana and Dianna are the same name said out loud. Together the 3 spellings went to 1,350, which makes it the 247th most-given girls’ name of the year — 14,695 places above the chart.
About 1 girl in 1,191 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 321,453 for Dyanna itself.
Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Melvine test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Dyanna's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Melvine climbed just as high around 1922, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Melvine's path sketches the road Dyanna is walking now.
Dyanna sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- Everyone already knows how to say it; the sound is one of the most settled in English.
- Dee, Dyan and Anna are all inside it, so there is a short form for every register.
- The y makes the written name distinct without asking anyone to learn a new sound.
- It will be written Diana every single time it is heard rather than read; the y and the second n both have to be given out loud.
- A name that must be spelled on every form is a small tax paid daily rather than once.
- The classical name behind it is so well known that this reads as a variation on it rather than as a name of its own.
