Morgann
Feminine · “sea-circle”
Morgann is a Welsh name with an extra n. Morgan joins two old Welsh words, and the likelier pair gives something like sea-circle — a name from a country with sea on three sides, where a word for the edge of the water does a lot of work. The doubled n is American and silent, and it was doing a specific job when it appeared.

The story of Morgann
Morgan was a man's name in Wales for centuries and a very common Welsh surname besides. It moved to America with Welsh emigration and stayed masculine for a long time, then crossed to girls in the later twentieth century — the Arthurian sorceress presumably helping, since she gave English readers a woman with the name to point at. When a shared name crosses that way, American spelling reliably supplies a marker: a doubled letter, a y, or a changed ending. Morgann took the doubled n, and it signals the girls' version without altering a sound.

sea-circle; or sea-born
Welsh mor is the sea, and the second element is the argument: cant, a circle or completion, gives sea-circle, and geni, to be born, gives sea-born. Both are old readings and both are defended. Morgan le Fay in the Arthurian romances is the best-known bearer and her name is spelled the same way, though the character is French literary invention layered onto Welsh material. Nothing about the first element is disputed; it is the sea, plainly.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

The Aracelia test
Every popular name lives one long story — a climb, a peak, a slow settling back. Morgann's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Aracelia climbed just as high around 1955, and its whole arc is on record. Line the two peaks up, and Aracelia's path sketches the road Morgann is walking now.
Morgann sits in the calm middle of the cycle — neither chasing a wave nor sliding off one. Middle-of-the-cycle names age slowly and predictably.

The trade-off
- It is a genuine Welsh name with a documented first element and a long history in the language.
- It works for either child, which the plain spelling also does.
- Two syllables with a firm first stress, which carries a long surname easily.
- Morgan is the standard spelling and this one will be rewritten as that everywhere.
- The doubled n is silent, so it must be dictated and will still be dropped by databases.
- The Arthurian sorceress is the association most readers bring, and she is not a sympathetic figure in most tellings.
