Kamri is a small, tight American coinage of the 1990s: two syllables, a K opening, and an -i ending doing the work that -y or -ie would have done a generation earlier. It sits with Kamryn, Kambri and Camri, and none of them has a source older than the birth records.

Where it comes from

Our story of Kamri

The final -i is worth noticing on its own. English has spelled affectionate endings -y and -ie for centuries — Molly, Sally, Annie, Katie — and both were exhausted by the middle of the twentieth century. The -i spelling arrives as the third option, and it does something the other two do not: it looks modern rather than diminutive. Kami, Bri, Codi, Jodi, Toni, Kamri, Jaci. A name ending in -i reads as a full name where the same name ending in -ie reads as a nickname, and that is most of why the spelling spread. Kamri is a product of that, and its 1996 peak sits at the height of the convention. Underneath, the sound is probably Cameron's, worn down to two syllables, which is a genuinely old way for names to form.

Meaningnot established

Not established

No source establishes an etymology. Kamri is generally treated as a shortening or respelling of Kamryn, itself a feminine respelling of the Welsh-derived Cameron — from Gaelic cam sròn, crooked nose, a settled reading for Cameron. That connection is plausible and undocumented. The -i ending is an American spelling convention of the 1980s and 1990s and carries no meaning.

Kamri sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1996, with 53 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

Rank is a position, a count is a headcount, and they move independently — a name can hold its rank while the number of babies behind it falls. Source: U.S. Social Security Administration.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Kamri went to 24 girls in 2025, but Kamry, Camry and Camri are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 79, which makes it the 881st most-given girls’ name of the year — 4,357 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 20,345 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 66,969 for Kamri itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method
