Where it comes from

The story of Camry

The Camry was launched in 1982 and became one of the best-selling cars in the United States, which is what put the word into general American awareness. Toyota's crown convention is explicit and was applied across the range for three decades. The given name appears in American records from the late 1980s and peaks in 1997, which fits a car-derived name; it also sits within a hair of Camryn and Camri, which come from Cameron, and no individual bearer can be assigned to one route. American naming has a long history of car names, including Chevrolet, Lincoln, Mercedes and Ford, so either account is entirely ordinary.

crown

Toyota's own account derives Camry from Japanese kanmuri, a crown, contracted for the export market. The company's naming convention through the 1950s to 1980s used crown words across several languages: Crown, Corona, Corolla and Camry. Separately, the American given name may simply be a respelling of Camryn or Camri, which descend from the Scottish Cameron and have no connection to any crown.

Camry sits in the rare tail. Its best year on record was 1997, with 98 girls. Today it is given to few enough children that it does not enter the ranked charts at all.

counting every spelling

The SSA counts spellings, not names. Camry went to 16 girls in 2025, but Kamry, Kamri and Camri are the same name said out loud. Together the 4 spellings went to 79, which makes it the 881st most-given girls’ name of the year — 5,957 places above the chart.

About 1 girl in 20,345 born in 2025 was given one of these spellings — against 1 in 100,454 for Camry itself.

Spellings are grouped by a fixed rule that folds interchangeable English spellings of one sound (ck/k, ph/f, x/ks, a non-initial y for i) and keeps vowels apart, so Sean and Shawn stay separate names. It errs towards splitting: a family here is never larger than the truth. SSA national data, 2025. Method

Camry's later chapters haven't been written yet, so we borrowed them: Anel climbed just as high around 1974, and its whole arc is on record.
